Relais San Maurizio provides centuries of monastic history and gourmet tradition
Tucked away in the Santo Stefano Belbo landscape is the jewel known as Relais San Maurizio. Once a 17th-century Monastery, the hotel has retained all of the original architecture, mystery, and antiquity of its origins. Vaulted ceilings and frescoed walls tell the stories of the Franciscan, Trappist, and Cistercian monks who called this splendour home until 1862. The pristine gardens whisper the secrets of that bygone era, and the all-encompassing park areas provide a sense of seclusion from the local villages.
Every one of the 30 guest rooms and suites respects the traditional architecture of the original building. Each is furnished in a different, yet beautiful fashion, and decorated appropriately. When Ernest Hemingway invented the Martini, it was only after a stop in the Langa area where Relais San Maurizio resides. Paying tribute to this world-changing discovery, the Truffle Cafe Wine & Cocktail Bar proudly serves not only the finest Martinis in the region but also an extensive list of vintage wines. When spirits will not suffice, the Truffle Bistrot is available for a light lunch, specializing in dishes prepared from local fresh ingredients.
Vermouth is not the Langa’s only claim to fame, the area is widely recognized as the birthplace of Moscato, Barbaresco and Barolo grapes. What many do not realize is that the monks who inhabited this incredible manor also brought with them a number of herbs and fungi from their homelands.
